The Plaza Grande sits atop the site where Garden State Park, one of New Jersey's premier thoroughbred racetracks, once stood. The track opened in 1942 and its popularity helped spawn the growth of the city of Cherry Hill. Standing across from the Latin Casino and Rickshaw Inn, Garden State Park was a monument to Cherry Hill's luxury and entertainment heyday. The Plaza Grande pays tribute to this legacy throughout the property. During its prime the track hosted some of the nation’s finest thoroughbred racehorses including Whirlaway, Citation, and Secretariat.

During its heyday the track hosted some of the nation’s finest thoroughbred racehorses at its signature Jersey Derby and Garden State Stakes races including Whirlaway, Citation, and Secretariat. On April 14, 1977, a fire starting in a racetrack restaurant raged undetected until it engulfed and destroyed the track’s massive wooden grandstands. Horses resumed training the very next day but Garden State Park's racing prestige was coming to an end. The race track reopened on April 1, 1985. Over the years, the race track held some notable races however, as time went on the race track suffered. It never regained its former glory and was closed in 2001.

Tri-State Ventures purchased the property in 2014. Tristate Ventures, L.P. (Tristate) was established in 2001 as a development company specializing in retail and residential real estate. It has played a leading role in developing and repositioning a diverse portfolio of properties that includes grocery anchored strip centers, enclosed malls and power centers and planned unit developments. Tristate Ventures’ portfolio is comprised of more than 3.5 million square feet.
